Boby Bunny

The Bunnybrains are a psychedelic, one of a kind band originally from Connecticut, born as a project that was supposed to go against the type of music commonly listened in the late 1980s. However, this project came to be thanks to Bob Barrett, best known as Bobby Bunny, the band&;s founder. Learn more at Bunnybrains.net.

Little is know about Bobby Bunny before 1987, except that he was a SUNY (State University of New York) Purchase College student, who had a solo electronic project called Invaders from Sears. It was at SUNY Purchase that he met Elisa Flynn, who slowly started to collaborate in his solo project. However, they both shared the same thoughts when it came to music, and knew they could create a fresh and unique musical project, completely different to the hardcore punk that was listened around the art school back in the day. Bobby Bunny and Elisa Flynn started using Bobby&;s aunt&;s basement in Danbury, Connecticut as rehearsal site and it was precisely there where they first created a few songs and decided to name their project the Bunny Brains. Nevertheless, after recording only two songs for a possible demo, Elisa Flynn decided to follow her own musical aspirations, leaving Bobby alone with this project. However, he didn&;t want to forget about the Bunny Brains and a month after Flynn&;s departure, Malcolm Tent came into the picture to save the Bunnybrains.

Malcolm Tent was the owner of a local punk shop called “Trash American Style” and a record label called TPOS. Malcolm met Bobby Bunny at his aunt&;s basement and in a few hours they had already come up with 6 songs for a demo called the Bunny Brains. The music scene in Danbury, Connecticut was small and the few musicians in town usual belonged to different bands. The Bunnybrains was an “open project”, which meant that anyone could come and go as they pleased, to the point that they had over 65 different musicians. This way, Malcolm and Bobby met Dan Seward, better known as Eg the Poet, who became a permanent in the Bunnybrains.

A while after this, Bobby and Dan started to experience artistic and personal differences and Bobby decided it would be good to put the Bunnybrains in hold for a while while he pursued other aspirations. At this time, Bobby Bunny graduated college and moved to Boston, where he was hired by “Beme Seed”, that had signed a record deal with Rough Trade. Beme Seed serve as an amazing experience to the life of a rock star. In the mean time, Dan had continued with the Bunnybrains project and after Beme Seed broke apart, Dan called Bobby a few times to appear as guest. The Bunnybrains had gained popularity, but it wasn&;t what Bobby wanted, so in 2002 he decided to call Malcolm Tent again and together they came up with a new project called Ultrabunny, which was closer to the original Bunnybrains sound from 1988.
